New Delhi: Filmmaker Karan Johar made headlines after stepping onto the Met Gala 2026 red carpet in New York, becoming the first Indian director to attend the global fashion event. His appearance instantly drew attention, marking a significant moment for Indian representation in international fashion culture. Johar attended the gala under the theme “Costume Art” and its dress code “Fashion is Art.”

Amul Celebrates with Viral Topical Campaign

Soon after his appearance, dairy brand Amul released a themed illustration celebrating Johar’s Met Gala debut. The brand’s signature topical post featured its mascot dressed in a couture-inspired avatar, paying tribute to the filmmaker’s global spotlight moment. The witty headline captured attention online, and the campaign quickly went viral across social media platforms, drawing engagement from fans and public figures alike.

Manish Malhotra Designs Inspired by Raja Ravi Varma

Johar’s outfit was specially designed by fashion designer Manish Malhotra, who drew inspiration from legendary painter Raja Ravi Varma. The ensemble reimagined classical Indian drapery with a modern couture structure. It incorporated artistic references from iconic Ravi Varma paintings such as Hamsa Damayanti, Arjuna and Subhadra, and Kadambari, blending cultural storytelling with contemporary fashion design.

The garment also featured intricate hand-painted gold detailing, created by skilled artisans, giving it the appearance of wearable art. The design aimed to merge heritage craftsmanship with modern silhouettes, positioning the outfit between costume and couture.

Johar on Personal Expression Through Fashion

Speaking about his debut look, Johar emphasised emotional authenticity over representation. He shared that he did not intend to “explain India” at the global platform but instead wanted to express his personal identity, which naturally reflects his cultural roots. He described the inspiration from Raja Ravi Varma’s work as deeply personal, connecting cinema, memory and visual storytelling.

Johar added that the look represented inherited artistic emotion, something he had grown up absorbing unconsciously, and expressed through fashion for the first time on a global stage.
