Srikakulam: A tragic stampede at the Venkateswara Swamy Temple in Kasibugga, Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh, claimed at least nine lives and left several others injured on Saturday morning. The incident occurred around 11:30 am during heavy rush of devotees gathered to offer prayers on the occasion of Ekadashi.

According to preliminary reports, overcrowding inside the temple premises led to chaos as devotees surged forward, resulting in several people being trampled.

Police and temple authorities immediately intervened to control the situation and shift the injured to nearby hospitals for treatment. Rescue and relief teams, including local police, fire personnel, and medical staff, were deployed swiftly to manage the crisis.

CM Chandrababu Naidu Expresses Deep Grief

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives in the stampede and described the incident as “extremely heartbreaking.” Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Naidu said he was “shocked” by the tragic turn of events at the revered temple.

“The stampede incident at the Venkateswara Temple in Kasibugga in Srikakulam district has caused a shock. The death of devotees in this tragic incident is extremely heartbreaking. I express my deepest condolences to the families of the deceased,” the Chief Minister wrote.

Naidu also directed officials to ensure that those injured receive immediate and proper medical treatment. “I have instructed the officials to provide speedy and proper treatment to those who have been injured. I have requested local officials and public representatives to visit the site and oversee relief measures,” he said.

State Ministers and Local Leaders Mobilised

Andhra Pradesh Minister Nara Lokesh also conveyed his condolences and expressed solidarity with the families of the victims. Calling the incident “deeply saddening,” Lokesh stated that the government is extending all possible medical and financial assistance to those affected.

“The stampede at the Kasibugga Venkateswara Temple has caused the deaths of several devotees, plunging us into profound shock. I extend my deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives,” Lokesh posted on X.

He further mentioned that he had spoken with officials, district minister Achchennaidu, and local MLA Gauthu Shirish to ensure swift relief. “Immediate assistance and quality treatment are being provided to the injured,” he said.

Situation Under Control, Probe Likely

Local authorities confirmed that the situation has since been brought under control. Police have begun an investigation into the cause of the stampede, with a focus on crowd management lapses and temple security measures.

The tragic incident has cast a shadow over Ekadashi celebrations in the region, with thousands mourning the loss of lives. The state government is expected to announce compensation for the victims’ families and take steps to strengthen safety protocols at major religious gatherings.
