New Delhi: A massive stampede has occurred in Srikakulam, a town located in the Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh state. Nine people have lost their lives in the stampede.
A tragic incident occurred on Saturday in the Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh when a stampede broke out at the Venkateswara Temple in Kashibugga during the Kartik month due to a massive crowd of devotees.
Thousands of devotees had gathered for darshan (viewing of the deity) when chaos erupted, resulting in the death of 9 people and injuries to several others. The temple premises were thrown into disarray after the incident.
A large number of people had arrived at the temple to offer prayers to Lord Venkateswara during the auspicious Kartik month. It is reported that the temple management and local administration were unable to control the surging crowd.
Suddenly, pushing and shoving began, causing people to fall on top of each other. The situation quickly spiraled out of control, and several people were trampled in the stampede. Relief and rescue operations were immediately launched, and the injured were admitted to nearby hospitals.
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu expressed deep sorrow over the tragic incident and offered his condolences to the families of the deceased. He said,
“This incident at the Kashibugga temple is extremely tragic and heartbreaking.”

He instructed officials to provide immediate and the best possible medical care to the injured and ensure that there is no negligence in relief efforts. The Chief Minister also ordered a high-level inquiry into the incident.
The state government has launched an immediate relief operation. Agriculture Minister K. Achannaidu visited the spot and reviewed the situation in coordination with the temple administration.
He assured that all the injured would receive the best medical treatment and that a detailed investigation would be conducted.
A statement issued by the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) said that the incident occurred due to the large crowd of devotees on the occasion of Ekadashi. Police and administrative teams are present at the spot, and additional police forces have been deployed to control the situation.
Security has been increased around the temple premises. The administration has stated that it will develop new strategies for crowd control and entry management to prevent similar incidents in the future. The state government has also indicated that it will announce compensation for the families of the deceased.
This incident once again raises the question of why adequate arrangements are not made for crowd management at religious sites. It serves as a warning to the administration to further strengthen security arrangements for upcoming festivals and religious events.
