New Delhi: A heavily camouflaged test mule of a new electric SUV from Chery has been spotted on Indian roads suggesting that the model will launched soon locally. The upcoming SUV will be based on the Chery iCar V23 and is expected to be brought to India by JSW Motors as part of its growing lineup of rebadged Chinese models.

ICar V23‑based SUV is set to become the third product in JSW Motors’s planned model onslaught. JSW Motors has been building a portfolio of vehicles sourced from Chinese brands like Jetour, Jaecoo and iCar all of which are sub‑brands of Chery Automobile.

JSW Motors is entering the Indian automotive market with its own standalone brand, while also continuing its joint venture with MG Motor India.

The Expected Launch Timeline

Industry insiders suggested the new electric SUV will be launched in 2028. It is likely to follow two other slated JSW Motors launches:

Jetour T2‑based- plug‑in hybrid vehicle (PHEV)

Jaecoo J5‑based -electric SUV (eSUV)

The test vehicle spotted on the road was heavily covered in camouflage, but several design cues were still visible.

What the Spy Shots Reveal

Despite the disguise, the prototype showed a "boxy overall shape". Key details include:

  • A protrusion on the tailgate likely a dedicated storage area for charging cables.
  • Horizontal tail‑lights reminiscent of the G‑Class SUV.
  • Flared wheel arches, a sidestep and a kinked rear window line
  • These elements suggest a rugged yet modern design language for the production SUV.

Battery, Performance and Range Expectations

The iCar V23 is offered with two battery options:

59.93 kWh battery with a rear motor producing 136 hp and 180 Nm of torque (claimed range ~401 km CLTC)

81.76 kWh battery with a dual‑motor setup producing 211 hp and 292 Nm of torque (claimed range ~510 km CLTC)

DC fast‑charging capability ranges between 85 kW and over 100 kW. It’s not yet clear which battery versions JSW will offer in India, but a dual‑motor, all‑wheel‑drive variantcould stand out in its segment with few rivals.
