Top Rugged SUVs Coming to Indian Market in 2026–27
New Delhi: The SUV segment in India is growing rapidly, and the demand for vehicles with off-roading capabilities is constantly increasing. In response to this growing demand, several major auto companies are preparing to launch new and updated off-roading SUVs in India. In the coming days, we can expect to see powerful vehicles like the MG Magester, Mahindra Scorpio N facelift, Scorpio Classic facelift, and the new-generation Toyota Fortuner in the Indian market. These SUVs are expected to feature powerful engines, 4WD systems, and advanced off-roading features.
The popularity of off-roading SUVs in India is primarily due to their robust construction and superior performance on difficult terrain. Most off-road SUVs are built on ladder-frame or body-on-frame chassis, which provide them with greater strength and durability. These vehicles can easily navigate hilly terrain, mud, rocks, and rough roads. This is why adventure enthusiasts prefer these SUVs.
MG Motor's new SUV, the MG Magester, was recently launched in India, and prices are expected to be announced in April 2026. Bookings have been opened, and deliveries are expected to begin in May. This SUV is powered by a 2.0-liter twin-turbo diesel engine paired to an 8-speed automatic gearbox. This engine produces approximately 215 horsepower and 478 Nm of torque. It will also feature an on-demand 4WD system, 10 terrain modes, and an M-Crawl feature, making it easy to navigate even difficult terrain. Notably, this SUV will also be able to ford water up to 810 mm deep.
Mahindra is also preparing to soon roll out a mid-life update for its popular SUVs, the Scorpio N and Scorpio Classic. Both models are expected to receive minor design changes and some new features. However, the existing engine options are unlikely to change significantly. The 4WD system will be available only in the diesel variants. Additionally, drive modes such as Zip, Zap, and Zoom will be available, offering a better driving experience in different conditions.
A new generation of the Toyota Fortuner, one of the most popular SUVs in the off-roading segment, is also on the way. Its global debut is expected by the end of 2026, with an Indian launch expected in early 2027. The new Fortuner will be based on an updated IMV ladder-frame chassis, and its design may be inspired by the new Toyota Hilux. It is also expected to feature advanced safety features such as ADAS.
Overall, the coming years are set to be significant for off-roading SUVs in the Indian auto market. With powerful engines, modern technology, and robust designs, these new vehicles could prove to be excellent options for adventure-loving customers.
