Patna: A major political transition is underway in Bihar following the resignation of the chief minister and the dissolution of the state cabinet after its final meeting in Patna. The move formally ends the current government’s tenure and sets the stage for the formation of a new administration.

The development is being seen as a turning point, potentially paving the way for a BJP-led government in the state for the first time under the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

NDA Meeting to Decide Next Chief Minister

The focus has now shifted to the NDA, which is scheduled to hold a crucial meeting at 4 pm in the Central Hall of the Bihar Legislative Assembly. The meeting is expected to finalise the leader of the legislature party, effectively determining the next chief minister.

The swearing-in ceremony is likely to take place soon after the decision, possibly as early as the following day.

Key Names in Contention

Among the prominent names being discussed is Samrat Choudhary, who is considered a strong contender due to his organisational role and political prominence. Another name drawing attention is Nishant Kumar, though party insiders suggest the final call will rest with the BJP’s central leadership.

Observers note that the leadership could also opt for a surprise choice, as seen in previous political decisions.

Numbers Favour NDA Formation

The BJP currently holds 89 seats in the 243-member Bihar Assembly, making it the single largest party. Along with its allies JD(U), LJP (Ram Vilas), Hindustani Awam Morcha, and Rashtriya Lok Morcha the NDA commands a comfortable majority with over 200 MLAs.

Once the legislature party leader is elected, NDA legislators will meet to formally extend support and approach the governor to stake claim to form the government.

Role of Nitish Kumar Going Forward

Even after stepping down, Nitish Kumar is expected to remain active in state politics. Leaders within JD(U) have indicated that he will continue to play a guiding role during the transition, ensuring continuity as Bihar moves into a new political phase.
