Nitish Kumar Resigns as MLC
Patna: In a major development in Bihar politics, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has resigned from his position as a Member of the Legislative Council (MLC). JDU MLC Sanjay Gandhi arrived at the Bihar Legislative Council today and formally submitted his resignation at the Secretariat. This move has sparked political turmoil in the state.
Cabinet Minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary confirmed the resignation. He stated that this decision signals a major change in the state's leadership structure. According to party insiders, this move is being considered the beginning of a major political transition, and Nitish Kumar may also resign as Chief Minister in the coming days.
Nitish Kumar recently filed his nomination for the Rajya Sabha elections. On March 5, he completed the formal process. In an emotional message, he stated that it has been his long-held dream to be a member of both houses of Parliament.
He also reiterated that he will remain committed to the development of Bihar and will continue to guide the new government. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has welcomed his decision, and it is being considered politically significant.
Nitish Kumar's political journey has been full of ups and downs. He began his political career as an MLA in 1985. He later served as a Union Minister in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government. In 2005, he became the Chief Minister of Bihar for the first time.
He subsequently changed political alliances several times, sometimes forming governments with the BJP and sometimes with the Grand Alliance, but his hold on power remained strong. In 2025, he became Chief Minister for the fifth time with a landslide majority and was sworn in for the tenth time.
Speculation about Nitish Kumar's move to national politics has intensified the debate about succession. Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary is being considered a leading contender for the post of Chief Minister by the BJP.
Some JDU leaders believe that Nitish Kumar's son, Nishant Kumar, has also become active in politics and could be considered a potential successor in the future. Discussions on this issue have intensified within the party and the situation may become clearer in the coming days.
