Shreyasi Singh becomes newest member of Bihar cabinet
Patna: Shreyasi Singh, the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJPs) MLA from Jamui, took oath as a minister on Thursday following the expansion of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s new cabinet.
The NDA returned to power with a sweeping mandate in the Bihar Assembly elections, winning 202 of 243 seats. Nitish Kumar was sworn in as Chief Minister for the 10th time, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other dignitaries present at the ceremony.

The BJP emerged as the single largest party with 89 seats, while Nitish Kumar’s JD(U) won 85, forming the two key pillars of the NDA alliance.
Who is Shreyasi Singh?
Shreyasi Singh is a celebrated athlete and Arjuna Award-winning shooter who transitioned from a successful sports career to politics. She is the daughter of late Union Minister Digvijay Singh and former MP Putul Kumari, giving her a strong political family background. Her grandfather, Kumar Surendra Singh, was also associated with the National Rifle Association of India.
Before stepping into politics, Shreyasi had an impressive sporting journey. She won Gold in double trap shooting at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast and a Silver at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
She also represented India in the 2013 Trap Shooting World Cup in Mexico and won a Bronze medal in the team event at the 2014 Asian Games. She is also an Arjuna Award recipient and competed in the 2024 Paris Olympics, becoming the first shooter from Bihar to do so. She recently won a Gold medal at the 61st National Shooting Championship.
Shreyasi’s Political Rise
Shreyasi joined the BJP in 2020 and contested from Jamui, where she defeated RJD’s Vijay Prakash Yadav by over 41,000 votes. In the 2025 Assembly elections, she strengthened her position further with a massive win, defeating RJD candidate Mohammad Shamshad Alam by more than 54,000 votes.
Her growing influence within the BJP and her popularity in Jamui played a major role in her induction into the cabinet. She is known to share a good rapport with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and has been viewed as an important part of the NDA’s strategy in Bihar.
A New Role in the Government
Following the NDA’s landslide win, the BJP included several women legislators in the new cabinet. Shreyasi Singh is among the 20 ministers inducted alongside senior leaders like Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Sinha. Her appointment reflects the BJP’s efforts to promote young faces and reward strong performers within the party.
With her transition from international shooting arenas to Bihar’s political landscape, Shreyasi Singh continues to carve out a significant place for herself both in sports and public life.
