New Delhi: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Thursday approved the induction of 28 senior officers of the Uttar Pradesh Provincial Police Service (PPS) into the Indian Police Service (IPS) cadre.
The approval comes following the recommendations of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) based on the 2025 select list, with the Centre issuing an official notification to formalise their promotion.
The promotions follow a meeting of the UPSC Selection Committee held on June 25, 2026, to consider eligible PPS officers for induction into the IPS cadre. Based on the committee's recommendations, the Home Ministry granted approval, paving the way for the officers to join the IPS.
Among the promoted officers are two from the 1997 PPS batch, one from the 1998 batch, 15 officers from the 1999 batch and 10 officers from the 2000 batch. The induction marks a significant career milestone for the senior state police officers, who will now serve as IPS officers.
The promotion of officer Sanjay Kumar Yadav has been kept provisional. According to the notification, disciplinary proceedings against him are still pending. His induction into the IPS cadre will be subject to the outcome of the ongoing inquiry, and a final decision will be taken after the investigation is completed.
The induction of the 28 officers into the IPS cadre is expected to strengthen the senior leadership of the Uttar Pradesh Police. Officers inducted through the promotion quota bring decades of experience in law enforcement, crime investigation, public order management and district policing.
Their elevation is also expected to help fill vacancies in the IPS cadre while providing greater administrative responsibilities to experienced state police officers.
