NCB Chief Anurag Garg tenure extended till July next year
New Delhi: The Centre has extended the tenure of Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) Chief Anurag Garg until July next year, according to an order from the Ministry of Personnel.
Garg, a 1993-batch Indian Police Service officer from the Himachal Pradesh cadre, was appointed Director General of the NCB in September 2024. His initial tenure was set to end on May 23, 2026.
However, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved an extension of his deputation as DG, NCB, up to July 31, 2027 the date of his superannuation, as per the order dated May 21.
Under Garg’s leadership, the NCB has made significant strides in combating drug trafficking, including the country’s first-ever seizure of Captagon, infamously known as the “Jihadi Drug.” On May 16, Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced the bust of an international syndicate trafficking Captagon, with authorities seizing 227 kg of the substance, valued at Rs 182 crore.

Captagon, historically linked to the synthetic stimulant fenethylline developed in the 1960s, has earned the moniker “Jihadi Drug” due to intelligence reports connecting its misuse and trafficking with extremist networks in parts of West Asia.
Additionally, the NCB last month successfully facilitated the return of notorious international drug trafficker Mohammad Salim Dola from Turkiye, further underlining its intensified crackdown on transnational narcotics operations.
