New Delhi: The months-old controversy surrounding an alleged assault at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar took a fresh turn on Friday after activist Swatantra Bhardwaj was detained from Uttar Pradesh’s Bulandshahr. The development came after a viral podcast clip brought the case back into the spotlight and intensified demands for immediate police action.

The detention of Bhardwaj, who is accused of assaulting Sanjay Kumar, the father of student protester Nishu Azad, has triggered renewed political reactions, public debate and questions over the pace of the investigation. The case now stands at the centre of a larger conversation involving protest safety, alleged violence, online threats and the role of law enforcement in handling politically sensitive cases.

Jantar Mantar Protest Incident That Sparked The Controversy

The matter traces back to a demonstration at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar organised by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) over alleged examination paper leaks. According to the complaint filed with Delhi Police, Sanjay Kumar was recording the protest proceedings on his mobile phone when a dispute allegedly broke out over the recording.

The complaint stated that the argument escalated after several people became involved, leading to an alleged physical confrontation. Kumar alleged that he was attacked on the head with punches and hit with a hard object resembling an iron bangle. After the incident, he was taken to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, where doctors recorded two lacerated injuries on his head.

Delhi Police registered a case against Swatantra Bhardwaj and another accused, Suraj Kumar, under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Police Version And Medical Examination Report

Initially, Delhi Police said Bhardwaj and Suraj Kumar were detained at the protest site, questioned and later served notices. Police officials stated that the medical examination did not indicate a skull fracture and described Kumar’s injuries as simple head injuries caused during a scuffle.

The police maintained that the investigation was being conducted according to legal procedure and said further action would depend on evidence collected during the probe.

Viral Podcast Clip Changes The Course Of The Case

The controversy gained fresh momentum after a podcast video featuring Bhardwaj went viral on social media. The clip triggered strong reactions after Bhardwaj appeared to discuss the alleged assault and made claims that drew renewed attention towards the incident.

CJP leaders and opposition figures questioned why immediate arrest action had not taken place despite the seriousness of the allegations. The viral video also led to allegations that Bhardwaj had suggested he escaped strict action due to political connections.

Bhardwaj later rejected the allegations and claimed that he acted in self-defence. He said he was surrounded by several people during the incident and claimed that video evidence supported his version of events. He also denied receiving any political protection and questioned the authenticity and interpretation of the viral clip.

Delhi Police Launches Search Operation In Uttar Pradesh

Following increasing pressure, Delhi Police teams began efforts to trace Bhardwaj. According to police sources, teams reached locations in Bulandshahr while searching for him. Sources claimed that Bhardwaj had left Naithla village before police reached the area.

He was reportedly travelling towards Khurja on a motorcycle and was wearing a helmet, allegedly to avoid identification. Police deployed multiple teams, including personnel in plain clothes, to locate him. After the search operation, Bhardwaj was detained near Dhamra Nara village in Bulandshahr.

CJP Leaders Demand Tougher Action

Bhardwaj’s detention came shortly after a delegation from the Cockroach Janta Party met Delhi Police officials at Parliament Street police station. CJP co-conveners Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka, along with MPs Chandrashekhar Azad and Pappu Yadav, raised demands for stronger legal action.

The delegation sought the addition of attempt-to-murder provisions, criminal intimidation charges and sections under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Police assured the delegation that additional legal provisions would be examined based on investigation findings.

The authorities also indicated that a separate FIR would be registered over allegations of online abuse, threats and circulation of objectionable material targeting Nishu Azad.

Nishu Azad Claims Online Harassment After Incident

The controversy expanded further after Nishu Azad alleged that she faced online abuse and rape threats following the incident. She said the harassment affected her studies and made it difficult for her to attend school. CJP supporters have demanded strict action against those allegedly involved in online intimidation and targeted harassment.

Political Battle Intensifies

The issue soon entered the political arena after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi questioned why Bhardwaj was not in custody earlier and alleged that he was receiving political protection.

CJP leaders also raised questions over claims allegedly made by Bhardwaj during the podcast regarding political connections. The organisation sought clarification from BJP leaders Kapil Mishra and Union minister Chirag Paswan after their names were allegedly mentioned during the discussion.

The allegations have been denied, while Delhi Police has maintained that the investigation is being carried out independently according to legal procedures.

Investigation Moves To Next Phase

With Bhardwaj now detained, investigators are expected to question him regarding the alleged assault, the viral podcast statements and claims surrounding political influence. Police will examine medical reports, witness statements, digital evidence and other material connected with the case.

A key question now is whether additional serious charges will be added after further investigation. The case continues to draw attention as it combines issues of protest rights, alleged violence, online harassment and political accountability.
