New Delhi: The Ministry of Home Affairs has appointed senior IAS officer Gyanesh Bharti as the new Chief Secretary of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The appointment will take effect from the date he formally assumes charge.
Bharti, a 1998-batch officer of the Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Mizoram, and Union Territories (AGMUT) cadre, was repatriated to his parent cadre following an order issued by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet. The decision was made at the request of the Ministry of Home Affairs, which serves as the cadre controlling authority.
Prior to his new assignment, Bharti was serving on Central Deputation as the Deputy Election Commissioner at the Election Commission of India (ECI), a position he held since August 2025.
Throughout his administrative career, Bharti has held key administrative positions, including Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Commissioner of the unified Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), and Commissioner of the former South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC).
As Chief Secretary, Bharti will serve as the head of the civil services and top administrative authority in the Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
