New Delhi: In a significant shift in domestic fuel usage, around 6,000 households across the country have voluntarily surrendered their Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) connections after switching to Piped Natural Gas (PNG).

A senior government official thanked these consumers and urged others who have already adopted PNG-but still retain LPG connections-to surrender them in order to improve availability for those without access to piped gas.

Government Applauds Move

Neeraj Mittal, Secretary at the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, shared on social media that as of March 28, 6,000 PNG users had given up their LPG connections, calling it a “strong and responsible step.”

He further appealed to citizens to join this effort, emphasizing that surrendering unused LPG connections can help ensure equitable distribution, especially for households that still depend on LPG.

Supply Priorities Amid Global Crisis

The move comes as India adjusts its gas supply strategy due to disruptions linked to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. The government has prioritized gas allocation for domestic households and the transport sector.

While PNG and CNG supplies continue uninterrupted, industrial and commercial sectors are currently receiving about 80% of their usual gas requirements.

Expansion of PNG Network

The government is also accelerating the expansion of PNG infrastructure. Over 290,000 new PNG connections were added in March alone, reflecting growing adoption.

Efforts are underway to streamline approvals and strengthen the City Gas Distribution network, encouraging more households to transition from LPG to PNG.

Ensuring Stable Supply

According to official statements, fertilizer plants are currently operating at 70-75% gas supply capacity, while additional LNG cargoes are being arranged to meet rising demand.

The government has assured that proactive steps are being taken to maintain stable fuel supplies, even as global uncertainties continue to impact the energy sector.
