Centre raises MSP for all Rabi crops significantly (Img: IANS)
New Delhi: The Centre on Wednesday approved an increase in the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for all mandated Rabi crops for the 2027-28 marketing season, with safflower receiving the biggest hike at Rs 675 per quintal.
The decision was taken by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as the government seeks to ensure remunerative prices for farmers growing Rabi crops.
According to an official statement, the MSP for rapeseed and mustard has been raised by Rs 413 per quintal, while lentil (Masur) will get an increase of Rs 390 per quintal.
The MSP for barley has been increased by Rs 136 per quintal, followed by gram at Rs 83 per quintal and wheat at Rs 25 per quintal.
The government said the MSP increases for the 2027-28 marketing season were aimed at ensuring remunerative prices for growers for their produce.
The latest decision is also in line with the Union Budget 2018-19 announcement to fix MSP at a level of at least 1.5 times the All-India weighted average Cost of Production.
In recent years, the government has sought to encourage farmers to cultivate crops beyond cereals, particularly pulses and oilseeds, by offering higher MSPs for these crops.
The Centre also highlighted the increase in procurement of Rabi crops over the years. Wheat procurement during 2014-15 to 2025-26 rose to 3,715 LMT, compared with 2,254 LMT during 2004-05 to 2013-14.
Procurement of six Rabi crops during 2014-15 to 2025-26 stood at 3,921 LMT, up from 2,302 LMT during the earlier 2004-05 to 2013-14 period.

The government said MSP payments to wheat-growing farmers during 2014-15 to 2025-26 increased to Rs 7.31 lakh crore, compared with Rs 2.56 lakh crore during 2004-05 to 2013-14.
For farmers growing the six Rabi crops, the MSP amount paid during 2014-15 to 2025-26 rose to Rs 8.36 lakh crore, compared with Rs 2.65 lakh crore during 2004-05 to 2013-14.
The Centre said the higher MSPs are part of its efforts to provide remunerative returns to farmers while encouraging greater cultivation of pulses and oilseeds.
