New Delhi: Major relief has been granted to the Indian tycoon Gautam Adani, following the dismissal of the bribery charge filed against him by a US Judge, which brought to an end the criminal suit being heard against him in a US Court.

The legal battle arose from claims of bribery and fraud committed by Adani and other officials regarding solar energy contracts in India.

Despite dismissing the lawsuit, the Judge expressed concerns over the way the US Department of Justice (DOJ) withdrew the case.

Gautam Adani Faces Bribery Allegations Worth Over $250 Million

A New York federal court charged Gautam Adani and seven other individuals in November 2024.

According to US authorities, these individuals were engaged in a bribery scandal of over $250 million to acquire contracts for solar energy projects.

It was also alleged that these people misled investors and financial institutions when acquiring billions of dollars from them.

The Adani Group had maintained its innocence and commitment to the rule of law.

Judge Raises Concern Over DOJ's Way of Case Dismissal

While dismissing the case, Judge Nicholas Garaufis criticised the manner in which the DOJ's senior official handled the dismissal.

The decision process is said to have been “concerning,” while the involvement of officials in the process of deciding to dismiss the indictment raised questions in the court.

The court observed that it seemed unusual because it was taken after discussions among defence attorneys and without sufficient input from some of the investigating agencies.

Adani Welcomes Court Decision

Following the ruling, Gautam Adani said he welcomed the decision with respect for the judicial system. He stated that his faith in the rule of law remained strong and expressed confidence in the legal process.

The dismissal effectively removes a major legal challenge that had impacted the Adani Group’s global image.

$10 Billion US Investment Offer Was Not Linked to Decision

Reports had earlier suggested that Adani’s proposed investment of $10 billion in the US economy, along with plans to create thousands of jobs, was discussed during legal proceedings.

However, court documents clarified that the investment proposal did not influence the DOJ’s decision to withdraw the charges.
