Mumbai: Indian stock markets opened on a positive note during the special Muhurat Trading session on Sunday, with benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty registering early gains as investors welcomed the Hindu financial year Samvat 2083. The auspicious Diwali trading window began amid renewed market optimism following the indices' strongest weekly performance in nearly six years.
At the opening bell at 2:20 pm, the BSE Sensex advanced approximately 250 points, while the NSE Nifty 50 climbed nearly 40 points, reflecting a positive start to the abbreviated trading session. The initial gains set a bullish tone for the traditional market ritual, which holds considerable cultural and financial significance for India's investing community.
The special Muhurat Trading session is being conducted over a 70-minute window, from 2:20 pm to 3:30 pm. The Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) is also observing the same trading schedule, allowing participants in the commodity derivatives market to mark the auspicious occasion.
Muhurat Trading is one of the Indian stock market's most enduring annual traditions. Conducted on Diwali in conjunction with Lakshmi Puja, the special session symbolically marks the commencement of the new Vikram Samvat, regarded as the Hindu financial year. Investors, traders and market participants consider the occasion auspicious for initiating fresh investments, purchasing shares and beginning new financial commitments.
Although the session is relatively short, it attracts considerable attention from retail investors, high-net-worth individuals and institutional market participants. Many investors make token purchases or initiate positions as part of the customary belief that investing during Muhurat Trading can bring prosperity and financial good fortune in the year ahead. However, market performance remains subject to economic fundamentals, corporate earnings, liquidity conditions and broader domestic and global developments.
The markets entered Samvat 2083 against the backdrop of a significant recovery in investor sentiment. Indian equities had recorded their strongest weekly gains in almost six years in the preceding week, with the Nifty rallying more than 8 per cent. The Sensex and Nifty also extended their winning momentum to seven consecutive trading sessions, signalling a substantial improvement in market breadth and risk appetite.
The sharp weekly advance provided a favourable backdrop for the Diwali session, although market experts cautioned that the outlook for the new Samvat would require a selective and fundamentals-driven investment approach. According to their assessment, Indian equities could sustain a constructive long-term trajectory, but investors should moderate expectations and focus on companies with sound financials, consistent earnings visibility and sustainable business models.
Analysts indicated that earnings growth, rather than further expansion in valuation multiples, is likely to emerge as the principal driver of equity market performance in the coming year. This suggests that stock selection, corporate profitability, balance-sheet strength and the ability of businesses to withstand economic volatility will remain critical considerations for investors.
Market experts also highlighted India's long-term growth potential, maintaining that the country's economic fundamentals could support sustainable wealth creation over an extended investment horizon. They advised investors to prioritise quality stocks, earnings resilience and prudent portfolio allocation rather than chase short-term market momentum.
The emphasis on earnings-led growth also reflects a potentially more discerning market environment in which companies will need to demonstrate stronger financial performance to justify their valuations. Investors may therefore pay closer attention to quarterly results, management commentary, sectoral growth prospects and macroeconomic indicators while positioning their portfolios for Samvat 2083.
Muhurat Trading is traditionally associated with new beginnings, prosperity and wealth creation. The session, held on the occasion of Diwali and Lakshmi Puja, combines India's financial market practices with cultural beliefs surrounding the worship of Goddess Lakshmi, who is associated with wealth and prosperity.
With the Sensex and Nifty opening higher, Samvat 2083 began on an encouraging note for the domestic equity market. However, the sustainability of the rally will depend on corporate earnings, economic growth, global market trends and the broader investment environment in the months ahead.
