New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent five-nation diplomatic tour has resulted in major investment commitments and expansion plans worth nearly Rs 3.5 lakh crore, according to officials. The visit covered the UAE, Sweden, Norway, the Netherlands and Italy, with discussions focused on trade, technology, energy security and defence cooperation.

During the tour, Modi met executives from more than 50 major international companies with a combined valuation of nearly USD 3 trillion. Many of these firms already have significant operations in India, with existing investments estimated at around USD 180 billion.

Officials said several new projects are now under discussion across sectors such as semiconductors, logistics, manufacturing, infrastructure and artificial intelligence. The UAE alone announced fresh investments worth USD 5 billion in India.

Semiconductor and Technology Partnerships in Focus

One of the most significant outcomes of the tour was India’s push to strengthen semiconductor partnerships. Meetings in Europe focused on chip manufacturing ecosystems, supply chains and advanced technology cooperation as New Delhi aims to expand domestic semiconductor production.

The memorandum of understanding between Dutch semiconductor equipment company ASML and Tata Group emerged as a key development during the Netherlands leg of the visit.

At the India-Nordic Summit, talks also centred on green energy, digital infrastructure, innovation, AI and sustainable mobility. Nordic countries expressed interest in deeper technology collaboration with India.

Stronger Strategic and Defence Cooperation

The visit also strengthened India’s geopolitical and defence partnerships. India and the UAE expanded discussions on maritime security, defence manufacturing and cyber cooperation. Energy security remained a major focus, especially amid continuing uncertainty in global oil markets.

India and Italy elevated their relationship to a “Special Strategic Partnership,” reflecting growing cooperation in trade, defence production and critical technologies. Modi’s meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also attracted widespread global attention on social media.

India Projects Global Leadership Ambitions

Officials believe the tour successfully positioned India as a trusted economic and strategic partner at a time of shifting global alliances. Alongside business and diplomatic engagements, Modi received international honours for contributions to food security and sustainable agriculture.

The visit reinforced India’s broader strategy of balancing economic growth, strategic autonomy and deeper partnerships across Europe, the Gulf and the Indo-Pacific region.
