New Delhi: Jindal Steel has taken a major step toward strengthening India’s energy security by advancing coal gasification technology for steel production. The company is leveraging domestically sourced coal to reduce dependence on imported fuels while enabling lower-carbon manufacturing processes.
In a significant milestone, Jindal Steel has established India’s first coal gasification-based Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) plant. The facility uses synthesis gas, or syngas, derived from coal as an alternative to conventional fuels in iron-making.

The innovation comes at a time when global fuel supply disruptions have highlighted the need for reliable domestic energy sources. By integrating syngas into its operations, the company has also deployed it in galvanising and colour coating furnace lines marking a first for the steel sector.
Jindal Steel has further strengthened its approach by injecting syngas into blast furnaces, reducing reliance on imported coking coal. This integrated strategy not only improves efficiency but also lowers carbon emissions per tonne of steel produced.
The company’s initiatives align with broader efforts to transition toward sustainable industrial practices, while maintaining cost competitiveness in a challenging global environment.
Government initiatives such as the National Coal Gasification Mission are expected to support wider adoption of such technologies. These policies aim to promote cleaner use of coal and boost India’s energy self-reliance.

Industry leaders believe that coal gasification, when combined with carbon capture technologies, could significantly reduce emission intensity and support compliance with emerging global standards.
According to company leadership, syngas produced from domestic coal has the potential to replace imported fuels like methanol, ammonia, and LNG. This shift could help reduce foreign exchange outflows while strengthening India’s industrial resilience.
By adopting advanced coal gasification techniques, Jindal Steel is contributing to the vision of a self-reliant India, or Atmanirbhar Bharat. The company’s integrated approach highlights how innovation in traditional sectors can drive both sustainability and long-term economic growth.
