India’s semiconductor push gathers pace as 10 projects worth ₹1.6 lakh crore get approval under the Semicon India Programme. With pilot production underway at four units, the IT sector’s total revenue has also climbed to USD 283 billion.
24 chip design projects have been supported through startups
Launched with a total outlay of ₹76,000 crore, the programme focuses on strengthening the semiconductor value chain, including design, fabrication, assembly, testing, packaging and module manufacturing.
According to details shared in the Lok Sabha, the approved projects involve an estimated investment of around ₹1.6 lakh crore. These include two fabrication units and eight assembly, testing and packaging facilities. Four of these units have already begun pilot production, while others are at various stages of implementation.
The projects span multiple technologies such as CMOS silicon fabs, silicon carbide fabs, advanced and memory packaging, and display driver integrated circuits. Manufacturing facilities have been approved across states including Gujarat, Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Punjab and Andhra Pradesh.
The programme also aims to strengthen India’s chip design capabilities. A total of 24 chip design projects have been supported through startups, of which 16 have completed tape-outs. Thirteen of these projects have received venture capital funding.
To build a skilled workforce, around 350 universities have been provided access to Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools, which are currently being used by nearly 65,000 engineers and students.
The India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) has been set up as the nodal agency to appraise and recommend semiconductor manufacturing proposals. The mission is supported by semiconductor experts and representatives from various ministries and departments.
Separately, India’s information technology sector continues to show steady growth. According to data published by NASSCOM, total IT sector revenue has risen to an estimated USD 283 billion in 2024-25.

The government has been promoting IT sector growth, particularly in smaller towns and cities. It added that foreign direct investment data for the computer software, hardware and IT services sectors is published regularly by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade.
