New Delhi: Proceedings in the Lok Sabha remained disrupted on Wednesday as sustained protests by Opposition members brought legislative business to a near standstill. Speaker Om Birla appealed to the protesting MPs to reflect on their conduct, a day after eight Opposition members were suspended for throwing papers towards the Chair during a heated protest.

The Speaker said repeated disruptions were undermining the dignity of the House and preventing meaningful discussion on important national issues.

Limited Business Amid Sloganeering

Despite the chaos, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal briefly addressed the House to update members on the recently announced India-United States trade deal. Speaking amid continuous sloganeering, Goyal said India had successfully safeguarded the interests of sensitive sectors such as agriculture and dairy.

He informed the House that discussions with the U.S. were still ongoing and that further meetings would be held to finalise the draft agreement. However, no detailed debate could take place due to the continued uproar.

Rahul Gandhi Writes to Speaker

Adding to the political tension, Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi wrote to Speaker Om Birla on Tuesday, expressing strong objection to not being allowed to speak in the House. Gandhi described the incident as a “blot on democracy” and said his right to raise issues of national importance had been curtailed.

In his letter, the Congress leader referred to Monday’s debate on the Motion of Thanks to the President’s Address, during which he attempted to raise the issue of the 2020 India-China border conflict. Gandhi said the Speaker had asked him to authenticate a magazine he intended to quote, which led to his remarks being disallowed.

Deadlock Continues

The Opposition has maintained that the restrictions imposed on debate and the suspension of MPs amount to silencing dissent. Treasury bench members, however, accused Opposition MPs of deliberately disrupting proceedings.

With tempers running high and little consensus in sight, the Lok Sabha is yet to resume normal functioning. Further disruptions are expected as both sides remain locked in confrontation over parliamentary conduct and the right to speak in the House.
