New Delhi: With Republic Day being celebrated across India on January 26, investors are seeking clarity on whether stock market trading is operational today. National holidays often lead to changes in trading schedules, impacting market participation, liquidity and settlement timelines.

As per the official holiday calendar of Indian exchanges, trading activity has been suspended today across major financial markets.

Indian stock markets shut for Republic Day

The National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the BSE are closed on January 26 in observance of Republic Day. Trading has been halted across all segments, including equities, equity derivatives, currency derivatives and interest rate derivatives.

Market participants will not be able to place or execute trades today, and normal operations will resume on Tuesday, January 27. Investors are advised to plan transactions accordingly to avoid disruptions in settlement cycles or portfolio adjustments.

Commodity markets also remain closed

Commodity trading is also affected by the holiday. The Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) is observing a full-day shutdown, covering both the morning and evening trading sessions.

This means commodities such as gold, silver, crude oil and agricultural futures will not be traded today. Commodity market participants are expected to resume activity when trading reopens on Tuesday.

Second market holiday of 2026

The Republic Day closure marks the second trading holiday of the year for Indian stock exchanges. Earlier, markets were shut on January 15 due to the Municipal Corporation Election in Maharashtra.

In total, Indian exchanges are scheduled to remain closed for 16 days in 2026. These holidays include national observances, religious festivals and region-specific events that affect market operations.

Key upcoming stock market holidays

Several non-trading days are lined up in the coming months. Markets will remain closed on March 3 for Holi, March 26 for Ram Navami and March 31 for Mahavir Jayanti.

Other holidays later in the year include Bakri Id on May 28, Muharram on June 26 and Ganesh Chaturthi on September 14. Markets will also remain shut on Gandhi Jayanti (October 2), Dussehra (October 20), Diwali–Balipratipada (November 10) and Guru Nanak Jayanti (November 24).
