New Delhi: Indian benchmark stock indices started Friday’s trading session on a weak note as investors remained cautious despite improving global market sentiment. The BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty opened lower, with market participants adopting a selective approach amid ongoing global uncertainties and domestic factors.

The 30-share BSE Sensex declined 176.53 points, or 0.02%, to open at 77,903.43. The Nifty 50 also slipped 33.95 points to begin trading at 24,361.90. In the previous session, the Sensex had closed at 78,079.96, while the Nifty ended at 24,395.85.

Broader Market Shows Mixed Trend

The broader market displayed a mixed performance during early trading hours. The BSE Midcap Select Index gained 51.16 points, showing some resilience, while the BSE Smallcap Select Index declined 7.26 points, or 0.08%, to trade at 9,139.76.

Market breadth on the NSE remained positive, with 1,373 stocks advancing compared to 1,120 declining stocks. Around 107 stocks remained unchanged during the opening session.

Bajaj Finance, TCS Lead Early Gainers

Among Sensex-listed companies, Bajaj Finance, TCS, Titan, Eternal and Infosys emerged as early gainers. Bajaj Finance led the list with a rise of around 0.60% in morning trade.

On the other hand, Trent, Power Grid, IndiGo, Tata Steel and UltraTech Cement witnessed selling pressure. Trent was among the biggest losers, falling more than 1% during early trading.

Global Markets Provide Some Support

Asian markets traded mostly higher on Friday as Wall Street continued its positive momentum, supported by easing crude oil prices. Japan’s Nikkei 225 gained 524.41 points, or 0.77%, trading around 68,833 levels.

South Korea’s Kospi also moved higher, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng declined 232.51 points and Shanghai’s SSE Composite slipped marginally.

FIIs Continue Selling, DIIs Remain Buyers

Gift Nifty indicated a nearly flat opening for Indian markets, opening at 24,448.50 after falling 11 points from the previous close.

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) remained net sellers for the second consecutive session, selling equities worth Rs 510.69 crore on August 13. However, Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) continued their buying trend and purchased shares worth Rs 4,353.09 crore.

Analysts believe the market outlook remains cautiously positive, supported by lower crude prices and stronger global equities. However, geopolitical concerns and consolidation near key levels may keep volatility elevated in the near term.
