Road Accident Or Murder? Ahmedabad Police Uncover Shocking Twist In Suspected Honour Killing Case
Ahmedabad: A viral video allegedly became the trigger for a shocking family tragedy in Gujarat, where a 22-year-old woman was allegedly murdered by her father and brother in a suspected honour killing case. Police are investigating whether the video featuring her and a male friend sparked the deadly conflict that led to the crime.
The victim, identified as Sofia Farooq, worked as a receptionist at a hospital in Juhapura. Police allege that her father Mohammed Farooq Nawabkhan and brother Habil Farooq had objected to her friendship with other men after the video went viral around three months before her death.
What initially appeared to be a fatal road accident has now turned into a murder investigation, with police alleging that the father and son deliberately created a fake accident narrative to divert investigators.
The incident took place on the night of August 12. Sofia was reportedly travelling on a motorcycle with her brother near Samruddh Dairy in the Sarkhej area when the family claimed that an unidentified vehicle had struck their motorcycle from behind.
Sofia suffered serious injuries, including trauma to her head and legs. She was taken to Sola Civil Hospital for treatment but was declared dead on August 13.
At first, the case was treated as a possible hit-and-run incident. However, investigators began examining the circumstances surrounding the crash and allegedly found inconsistencies in the version presented to them. The investigation subsequently shifted from a road accident probe towards a suspected planned murder.
According to the police investigation, Sofia’s father and brother allegedly took her to an isolated stretch near Gheljipura village in Sarkhej. Investigators allege that Habil had concealed an iron hammer in his clothing before travelling to the location.
Police suspect that Sofia was attacked with the hammer before the accused allegedly moved the incident to a public road and attempted to make it appear that an unknown vehicle had caused the fatal crash.
The alleged staging of the accident became a key part of the investigation as police tried to reconstruct the sequence of events leading to Sofia’s death. The case therefore shifted from a suspected hit-and-run to an alleged pre-planned murder and attempted cover-up.
Police have linked the alleged murder to a video of Sofia with a male friend that reportedly went viral around three months before the incident.
Investigators allege that the video became a source of conflict inside the family. Sofia’s father and brother reportedly objected to her continued communication with other men and repeatedly reprimanded her.
Police suspect that the family dispute eventually developed into resentment and an alleged plan to kill her in the name of protecting family honour.
The case has once again raised concerns about how personal relationships and social media activity can become flashpoints for family conflict, particularly when traditional notions of honour and reputation are involved.
The Ahmedabad case has brought renewed attention to honour-based violence, in which family members allegedly resort to extreme measures over relationships, marriage choices, friendships or perceived damage to family reputation.
The alleged circumstances are particularly disturbing because the victim was reportedly working independently as a hospital receptionist, while the dispute allegedly centred on her interactions with a male friend.
The case also highlights the growing role of social media in family and community conflicts. A video circulating online allegedly became the starting point of a dispute that police now believe may have escalated into a fatal crime.
The accused have been identified as Mohammed Farooq Nawabkhan, 56, and his son Habil Farooq, 38. The two reportedly operate a fabrication business.
Police have registered a murder case against the father-son duo. Investigators are now working to establish the complete sequence of events and gather evidence supporting the alleged murder conspiracy.
The investigation is expected to examine the alleged weapon, the movements of those involved, the circumstances surrounding the motorcycle crash and other evidence that could establish what happened before and after Sofia sustained her fatal injuries.
Another major aspect of the case is the alleged attempt to present the murder as an accidental death. Creating a false road accident narrative can significantly complicate criminal investigations because investigators initially have to determine whether the death resulted from a traffic collision or deliberate violence.
In this case, police say further investigation exposed inconsistencies and led them towards the alleged involvement of Sofia’s own family members. The suspected cover-up has become an important part of the investigation alongside the alleged motive.
