New Delhi: Delhi Police has identified 2,873 people who have been caught on CCTV during violence linked to CJP protest to Parliament. As per an internal report presented to the government, facial recognition technology has been used to identify individuals caught on the footage involved in assaulting the police personnel during the protests.
As per the report, 989 of the identified individuals were criminals having prior records of crimes including murder, rape, robbery, arms violation and narcotics-related cases.
As per sources in the know of the investigation, out of the total number of people, 2,402 were matched through the police Crime Kundli database and 471 from the police dossier system.
The report has reportedly mentioned all the information regarding the people, including their names, images taken during protests, FIR details, police station details, criminal background along with the facial recognition matching date.
According to the police officials, 101 individuals faced charges for murder and 284 people linked to the cases of robbery and dacoity.
Also, the list had 62 individuals charged in attempt-to-murder cases.
It was further revealed that 92 individuals were associated with the crimes committed against women and children, which included 61 rape cases, 25 molestation cases and six cases under the POCSO Act.
According to officials, there were 229 individuals with cases under the Arms Act, 135 individuals with snatching cases, 67 individuals with NDPS Act and 19 individuals with kidnapping cases.
Police report has mentioned that the individuals were mapped in different districts with the maximum number of individuals found in North district, Outer district, and North West district. Other districts included North East, East, South West, Railway, Shahdara and Central districts.
It was revealed that most of the individuals were habitual offenders with several cases pending against them.
The CJP agitation started with issues surrounding the NEET exam row and then escalated into a procession to Parliament on July 20. The procession was blocked by the police, resulting in a clash between the protesting students and the security forces.
The 37-day-long agitation came to an end on July 25 when the government conceded to some of their demands, including the resignation of then Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and a committee to consider changes in the examination system.
The findings of the police will likely be a part of the further investigation into the violence.
