Over 500 Accounts, AI Deepfakes And Foreign Links: What Maharashtra Cyber Found During CJP Protests?

Mimbai: Maharashtra Cyber Police has claimed to have uncovered a large online network allegedly involved in spreading misinformation during the ongoing CJP protests. According to officials, more than 500 social media profiles were identified during a technology-driven investigation aimed at tracking coordinated online activity linked to the demonstrations.

The agency said the campaign allegedly sought to influence public opinion, create confusion and disturb public order through misleading digital content.

Advanced Tools Used in Investigation

Officials said investigators relied on Open Source Intelligence (OSINT), metadata analysis, behavioural pattern tracking, and advanced audio-video forensic techniques to examine online activity. These methods were used to identify coordinated campaigns and verify the authenticity of digital content shared across social media platforms.

Foreign-Linked Accounts Under Scanner

During the probe, Maharashtra Cyber identified 429 objectionable posts and social media accounts across platforms including Instagram, X, Facebook and YouTube. Investigators claimed that nearly 100 accounts appeared to be operated from outside India, including Pakistan and several Middle Eastern countries, and were allegedly amplifying misleading narratives related to the protests.

AI Deepfakes and Manipulated Content Detected

The agency also reported finding more than 140 posts and profiles containing AI-generated or AI-assisted content. These reportedly included deepfake videos, cloned voices, synthetic audio, digitally enhanced crowd visuals and manipulated footage.

Officials said forensic analysis detected multiple instances of facial reenactment and voice cloning. In one case, investigators reported a 100% confidence level for synthetic speech and 82% confidence for video manipulation, indicating the possible use of advanced AI tools.

Legal Action Initiated

Maharashtra Cyber said legal proceedings have been initiated against the identified accounts. Requests have also been sent to social media platforms seeking the removal of objectionable content. Authorities have urged citizens to verify information before sharing it online, warning that AI-generated misinformation is becoming increasingly sophisticated and difficult to identify.
