Bhopal: An 18-year-old NEET aspirant from Madhya Pradesh allegedly died by suicide in Nagpur after reportedly falling into distress over the controversy surrounding the medical entrance examination and allegations of a paper leak.
Akanksha Chaturvedi, a resident of Magania village in Mauganj district, had moved to Nagpur with her family to prepare for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET). She was found dead in her room on May 20, according to family members.
Akanksha’s father, Krishna Kumar Chaubey, is a farmer who was also working as a cook in Nagpur to support the family and fund his daughter’s medical coaching. Relatives said the family had taken a loan of around Rs 3 lakh through a Kisan Credit Card scheme and borrowed money from relatives for her studies.

According to the family, Akanksha was hopeful after appearing for the examination and believed she had performed well enough to secure admission into a medical college. However, reports related to alleged irregularities and paper leak controversies surrounding the examination reportedly left her emotionally disturbed.
A suicide note recovered by the family reflected her fear of having to appear for the examination again. In the note, she allegedly apologised to her parents and wrote that she did not have the strength to go through the exam process another time despite expecting a good score in the first attempt.
The heartbreaking incident has intensified concerns over the pressure faced by students preparing for highly competitive examinations.
The tragedy has also triggered political reactions in Madhya Pradesh. Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar reportedly spoke to the family and assured support, while Youth Congress president Yash Ghonghoria visited their residence to offer condolences.
NSUI national president Vinod Jakhar, along with party leaders, also met the family and announced financial assistance of Rs 2.5 lakh. The organisation additionally promised support in clearing the family’s outstanding Kisan Credit Card loan.
