Kolkata: Soon after Suvendu Adhikari took oath as West Bengal’s first BJP Chief Minister, his mother Gayatri Adhikari said her son’s biggest responsibility now is to ensure justice for victims of crimes, especially in the RG Kar rape-murder case.
Speaking after the swearing-in ceremony in Kolkata, Gayatri Adhikari said the people of Bengal were happier than even their family over the BJP forming government in the state.
“I will ask him to work towards ensuring justice for the RG Kar victim and all others who have suffered atrocities,” she said.

Apart from seeking justice for victims, Gayatri Adhikari also said the new government should prioritise employment and public welfare.
She expressed hope that the administration under Suvendu would work for ordinary citizens and address long-standing concerns related to law and order and opportunities for youth. Her remarks came at a time when the RG Kar case continues to remain a politically sensitive issue in West Bengal.
Gayatri Adhikari also spoke about her son’s political journey and struggles over the last several years.
According to her, Suvendu continued his political campaign despite facing repeated attacks and challenges while working against the Trinamool Congress government.
“He worked tirelessly during the last five years and survived several attacks,” she said, adding that he inherited his fighting spirit from his father.
Suvendu’s father, Sisir Adhikari, was a three-time Member of Parliament from the Kanthi Lok Sabha constituency and had earlier been associated with the Trinamool Congress. The Adhikari family later shifted to the BJP after Suvendu joined the party ahead of the 2021 Assembly elections.
Suvendu Adhikari took oath as Chief Minister at Kolkata’s Brigade Parade Ground in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and several NDA chief ministers.
Along with him, BJP leaders Dilip Ghosh, Agnimitra Paul, Nisith Pramanik, Ashok Kirtania and Kshudiram Tudu were also sworn in as ministers.
