A codeine syrup smuggling racket busted in Varanasi has triggered high alert along the India-Nepal border. With links stretching to Bangladesh and raids intensifying across UP, what is this network hiding and how far does it really go?
Maharajganj: The illegal trade of codeine-based cough syrup, recently uncovered in Varanasi, has alerted not only authorities in Uttar Pradesh but also investigation agencies across several other states. A recent probe revealed that the smuggling network is linked as far as Bangladesh, raising concerns about its growing reach.
As new connections continue to surface and strict action intensifies, raids on medical stores have been ramped up in several districts of UP. In Maharajganj, security agencies along the India-Nepal border have also been placed on high alert. Though no direct link to Nepal has emerged so far, the administration remains vigilant.
Security at the key Sonauli border along the India-Nepal route has been tightened further. Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) teams are thoroughly inspecting every vehicle entering or leaving the border area. Two-wheelers, in particular, are being checked in detail, with officers opening storage compartments to examine concealed items. No suspicious person or object is being allowed to pass without scrutiny.
SSB officials said that although they have not yet received any special directives regarding the case, the force is maintaining maximum vigilance on its own. Security agencies continue to keep a close watch on every movement along the border to prevent any attempt at smuggling.
