Major arms haul in Reasi raises security alert across the region
Reasi/Jammu: Security forces achieved a significant breakthrough during an intelligence-based operation in the dense forests of Mahore area in Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi district, recovering a cache of weapons and ammunition on Thursday.
The operation was launched in the Khataji Ridge forest area following specific intelligence inputs received by the local Army intelligence unit. During an extensive search of the difficult terrain, security personnel discovered hidden arms and ammunition suspected to have been stored for potential use.
The recovery included a pistol, a hand grenade and 184 rounds of ammunition along with other weapon-related equipment. Officials said further investigation is underway to determine the source of the weapons and whether they were linked to any active terror network or underground module.
According to officials, the recovered ammunition included 140 rounds of AK-47 ammunition, 19 rounds of PIKA machine gun ammunition and 25 rounds of pistol ammunition. Security forces also recovered an AK magazine and six ammunition cassettes from the location.
The recovery is considered significant due to the presence of multiple types of ammunition, indicating that the seized material may have been intended for use in sustained operations rather than isolated activity. Officials said the weapons were recovered during an ongoing search operation in the forest region, where security agencies have been maintaining heightened surveillance.
The search operation was initiated after specific intelligence information pointed towards the possibility of concealed arms in the Khataji Ridge area. Security forces moved into the challenging forest terrain and conducted detailed searches to locate the suspected weapons cache.
The operation reflects continued efforts by security agencies to identify and neutralise potential threats in Jammu and Kashmir, where forest routes and remote areas have often been used to hide weapons and logistical supplies.
Following the recovery, security agencies have started an investigation to establish the origin of the arms and ammunition. Authorities are examining whether the weapons were recently transported into the area or were part of an older hidden cache.
Investigators are also working to identify individuals or groups connected with the storage and possible intended use of the recovered material. Further searches are being carried out in surrounding areas to ensure that no additional weapons or suspicious items remain hidden.
The recovery comes amid continuous security operations across Jammu and Kashmir aimed at preventing militant activities and disrupting weapons supply networks. Security forces have increased monitoring in forest zones and remote regions due to their strategic importance and difficult accessibility. Officials said operations will continue until the area is fully sanitised and any possible threat is eliminated.
