Kolkata: The parents of the RG Kar Medical College rape-murder victim on Wednesday approached the Sealdah court in Kolkata, demanding the arrest of former Panihati MLA Nirmal Ghosh and two others in connection with the case.

The family alleged that attempts were made to destroy evidence after the death of their 31-year-old daughter, a postgraduate trainee doctor.

Allegations Of Evidence Tampering

According to the victim’s mother, former MLA Nirmal Ghosh, Somnath Das and local Trinamool Congress functionary Sanjib Mukhopadhyay played an active role immediately after the incident.

The family claimed that efforts were made to prevent a second post-mortem examination and alleged that the victim’s body was cremated in haste without necessary documents being handed over to them.

Speaking outside the court, the victim’s mother said the family had urged the court to direct the arrest and interrogation of the three individuals to ensure a fair investigation.

CBI Seeks Time To Respond

During the hearing, counsel representing the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) argued that investigative agencies could not be instructed on whom to arrest and informed the court that a response would be submitted.

The family’s lawyer maintained that custodial interrogation was necessary, alleging that the accused had “hijacked the body” after the incident. The counsel also pointed out that a supplementary charge sheet mentioned in the 2024 filing had not yet been submitted.

Next Hearing On June 5

The Sealdah court has scheduled the next hearing in the matter for June 5. The case has also gained political attention following the recent Assembly elections in West Bengal. The victim’s mother, who contested from Panihati, defeated Tirthankar Ghosh, son of former MLA Nirmal Ghosh.

Despite newly elected MLAs from North 24 Parganas taking oath on Wednesday, the victim’s mother chose to attend the court proceedings instead, saying seeking justice for her daughter remained her top priority.
