New Delhi: Bollywood rounded off 2025 with the release of Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri (TMMTMTTM), starring Kartik Aaryan and Ananya Panday. The film, aimed at a Gen Z audience, promised a bubbly, 90s-inspired romance but leaves viewers questioning whether mainstream Hindi cinema has moved forward.

Two Leads, Zero Chemistry

The movie follows Ray (Kartik Aaryan), a US-based wedding planner, and Rumi (Ananya Panday), an aspiring author from Agra. The pair meet at an airport bookshop, eventually finding themselves booked on the same yacht and the same cabin setting the stage for a whirlwind romance.

Yet, despite the picturesque European locales and scenic Croatian backdrops, the central pairing fails to convince audiences of their on-screen chemistry. Kartik and Ananya, who were last seen together in Pati Patni Aur Woh (2019), appear more like co-stars than lovers who “can’t be apart.”

Family Drama and Forced Subplots

Director attempts to spice the narrative with family elements: Jackie Shroff plays Rumi’s patriotic father, Col Singh, while Neena Gupta shines as Ray’s supportive single mother. Subplots, including Rumi’s sister’s quickie Tinder-to-wedding story, feel shoehorned in to keep the wedding-planner trope alive. Other characters, like a moony-eyed suitor and quirky uncles and aunties, add comic relief but do little to advance the story.

Nostalgia Over Substance

The film leans heavily on 90s-style melodrama, songs, and dance numbers, making it feel like a glossy throwback rather than a contemporary romance. Critics note that the movie relies on “glycerine and melodrama” to push the romance forward, leaving minimal room for authentic emotional connection.

Verdict

While the visuals are striking and veteran actors deliver some memorable moments, TMMTMTTM ultimately struggles to resonate. Its lengthy 2.5-hour runtime and formulaic storytelling underscore Bollywood’s hesitance to fully embrace modern romance narratives, leaving audiences with more style than substance as the year ends.
