Mumbai: Bollywood actor Madhuri Dixit has revealed her admiration for Namrata Sambherao’s much-loved Lolly character from the Marathi comedy show Maharashtrachi Hasya Jatra. During a special episode of the reality quiz show Honar Crorepati, Madhuri surprised the comedian by recalling one of Lolly’s popular sketches and recreating the character’s viral dialogue.
The upcoming episode features the cast of Maharashtrachi Hasya Jatra in a lively conversation with Madhuri. What began as an entertaining exchange turned into a memorable fan moment when the actress spoke about her fondness for Lolly.
As the conversation shifted to Namrata’s popular character, Madhuri enthusiastically expressed her affection for Lolly. When an excited Namrata asked whether she had watched the character’s performances, Madhuri confirmed that she had and specifically remembered the dentist sketch. Her recreation of Lolly’s signature dialogue added to the fun, leaving Namrata delighted. The interaction offered a glimpse of how the character has connected with audiences beyond the Marathi comedy show.
Lolly has become one of the recognisable characters on Maharashtrachi Hasya Jatra, thanks to her distinctive hairstyle, expressive mannerisms and amusing attempts at speaking English.
During the conversation, Namrata opened up about the inspiration behind Lolly’s unusual appearance and personality. She explained that growing up in Lalbaug Chawl in Mumbai exposed her to different expressions, speaking styles and everyday personalities that later influenced her performance. Namrata said the character was developed through a combination of observations and creative experimentation. She also revealed that she came up with Lolly’s distinctive hairstyle herself to make the character stand out. Lolly’s comic appeal partly comes from her confident use of English, despite making amusing mistakes. According to Namrata, the character believes she speaks the language well, and that confidence adds another layer to the humour. The writers and creative team also worked to ensure that each character on the show had an individual identity.
Lolly’s distinctive style has found fans beyond the regular audience of Maharashtrachi Hasya Jatra. Choreographers Geeta Kapur and Terence Lewis have also joined the trend by recreating the character in a social media reel. Madhuri’s appreciation adds another notable moment to the character’s growing popularity, highlighting how regional comedy performances can connect with a wider entertainment audience.
Although widely celebrated for her Bollywood career, Madhuri also has a connection with Marathi cinema. She made her Marathi film debut with Bucket List in 2018, directed by Tejas Prabha Vijay Deoskar. In the film, she played Madhura Sane, a homemaker who sets out to fulfil the wishes of a young woman whose heart she receives through a transplant.
Her appearance alongside the Maharashtrachi Hasya Jatra cast on Honar Crorepati brings together familiar faces from Marathi entertainment in a conversation filled with humour, nostalgia and appreciation for a popular comedy character.
