New Delhi: The Madras High Court has issued an interim order restraining unauthorised broadcast and streaming of the upcoming film Dhurandhar: The Revenge (Dhurandhar 2), ahead of its scheduled release on March 19.

Court Grants Interim Relief

Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy passed the ad interim injunction on applications filed by Reliance Industries Limited and its media arm Jio Studios. The producers had sought urgent protection against potential copyright infringement.

The court restrained internet service providers (ISPs) and cable TV operators from unlawfully transmitting or streaming the film without authorisation.

Concerns Over Piracy

In its commercial suit, Reliance alleged that various intermediaries might illegally distribute the film prior to or around its release, leading to financial losses. The producers also submitted certification from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) confirming their rights over the film.

The court observed that with the film’s release imminent, failure to grant interim protection could result in irreparable damage due to piracy.

Balancing Competing Interests

While granting relief, the court also acknowledged that the business interests of service providers could be affected. To address this, it directed the producers to indemnify the respondents against any potential losses arising from the injunction.

Based on this condition, the court issued an order restraining unauthorised broadcast or transmission of the film until April 15. Notices were also issued to the respondents.
