True Labor Before Delivery
New Delhi: True Labor refers to the beginning of childbirth marked by regular and painful uterine contractions that gradually lead to delivery. Medical experts define true labor as contractions that progressively cause thinning of the cervix, known as effacement, along with cervical dilatation and descent of the baby toward the birth canal.
Unlike false labor, true labor follows a steady pattern and becomes stronger with time. Doctors say recognising these symptoms early can help pregnant women seek timely medical attention and prepare for safe delivery.
One of the most noticeable signs of true labor is the increasing intensity of contractions. The contractions become more frequent, last longer and gradually grow more painful as labor progresses.

Health professionals explain that these contractions usually do not stop with rest, movement or changes in body position. Instead, they continue to intensify, indicating that the body is actively preparing for childbirth.
As labor advances, the gap between contractions becomes shorter, making the pain more regular and predictable.
True labor also brings important cervical changes. The cervix softens, thins and slowly opens to allow the baby to move through the birth canal during delivery.
Another common symptom is a blood-mixed discharge known as a “show.” Doctors noted that this discharge often increases as cervical dilatation progresses and is considered a normal sign of advancing labor.
In some pregnancies, the membranes surrounding the baby may rupture during labor, causing the release of amniotic fluid. However, medical experts explain that labor can continue even if the membranes remain intact initially.
Understanding the symptoms of true labor is important because it helps distinguish actual labor from false labor pains, which are usually irregular and do not lead to cervical changes. Early recognition also allows expecting mothers to receive proper medical care at the right time.
