Washington: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar gave a sharp response to a question from a Pakistani journalist during a media interaction at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.
During the interaction, the journalist questioned India’s position on terrorism and alleged that New Delhi was involved in supporting such activities in Pakistan. Responding to the question, Jaishankar said, “A terrorist country is asking me that question,” while dismissing the allegation.
The exchange took place after Jaishankar and Liberia’s Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti addressed the media following an event related to maritime security and the safety of seafarers.
India has repeatedly raised concerns over terrorism and security issues at international forums, maintaining that cross-border terrorism remains a major challenge. New Delhi has often called for stronger global action against terrorist networks and their supporters.
Pakistan, meanwhile, has continued to reject allegations made by India and has raised counter-allegations against New Delhi.
The brief exchange between Jaishankar and the Pakistani journalist drew attention during the ongoing UNGA session, where global leaders and diplomats are discussing major international issues, including security challenges, conflicts, and diplomatic cooperation.
The incident came amid continued diplomatic disagreements between India and Pakistan over terrorism-related issues. Both countries have frequently used international platforms to present their respective positions on security matters.
India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Harish Parvathaneni, was also present during the interaction and later indicated that the response from the External Affairs Minister had addressed the question.
The exchange has since become a widely discussed moment from the UNGA proceedings, highlighting the ongoing diplomatic tensions between the two neighbouring countries.
