Washington/Islamabad: Al-Qaeda’s media wing As-Sahab has released a new propaganda video featuring footage of Hamza bin Laden, the son of former terror chief Osama bin Laden, years after reports claimed he was killed in a US counterterrorism operation. The release, timed with the anniversary of the September 11 attacks, has raised fresh questions over Hamza bin Laden’s reported death and the terror group’s continued use of the Bin Laden name for recruitment.
Al-Qaeda’s media outlet As-Sahab released a 50-minute video titled 'A Quarter Century of the 11 September Raids', featuring previously unseen footage of Hamza bin Laden along with images of former Al-Qaeda leader, Ayman al-Zawahiri. According to reports, the video was released on the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, one of the deadliest terror attacks in modern history. Hamza bin Laden was widely considered a potential successor to his father Osama bin Laden before reports emerged about his death in 2019 during a US military operation near the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. However, Al-Qaeda has never officially confirmed his death or released the traditional funeral statement usually issued after the killing of senior leaders.
Security sources cited in reports said the latest video appears focused on promoting the ideology of current Al-Qaeda chief Saif al-Adl while using Hamza bin Laden’s image and the Bin Laden family legacy to attract supporters. The footage reportedly begins with visuals linked to the 2014 attack on Pakistan’s Karachi naval dockyard. Analysts believe the inclusion of the operation highlights the influence of Pakistani militant networks within Al-Qaeda’s leadership structure and propaganda activities.
In the video, Hamza bin Laden appears seated against a cracked mud wall while wearing a traditional white turban, with an assault rifle placed beside him. Experts believe the visual presentation was designed to portray him as a successor figure and connect him with the early imagery associated with global jihadist propaganda. The appearance has renewed speculation among security observers regarding the exact circumstances surrounding his reported death.

Reports in 2019 claimed that Hamza bin Laden was killed in a US counterterrorism strike carried out sometime between 2017 and 2019. Although multiple US media reports confirmed his reported death, the Pentagon did not publicly provide detailed confirmation about the operation, including the exact location and timing. Before reports of his death surfaced, Hamza had emerged as an important figure within Al-Qaeda. In February 2019, the US government had announced a reward of $1 million for information leading to his capture.
Some claims in 2025 had suggested that Hamza bin Laden could still be alive, keeping speculation around his fate alive.
