Dhaka: Security agencies across Bangladesh have issued a nationwide alert following intelligence warnings about possible terrorist attacks targeting critical locations. The advisory highlights key sites such as the Parliament complex, religious institutions, entertainment venues, and military and police facilities as potential targets. Authorities have also flagged armories as particularly vulnerable.

The alert, described as urgent and confidential, was circulated by police headquarters after receiving intelligence inputs. A senior official confirmed the development anonymously, citing the sensitive nature of the information.

Trigger Behind the Warning

The heightened alert comes after the arrest of Istiak Ahmed Sami, also known as Abu Bakar, who is believed to be linked to a banned extremist group. Investigators say he was in contact with two former military personnel. Intelligence agencies have also identified two individuals suspected of planning attacks, though no specific organization has been officially named. Authorities consider the suspects highly dangerous.

Security Measures Intensified

Specialized units, including the Criminal Investigation Department, Special Branch, and Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit, have been instructed to step up surveillance and coordination. Police forces nationwide have been told to remain vigilant, with local officials confirming tighter security at key installations.

Growing Concerns After 2024 Unrest

The alert comes amid rising concerns about extremist activity following the unrest known as the July Uprising, which led to the removal of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her Awami League government. The interim administration is currently led by Muhammad Yunus.

During the unrest, several prisons were attacked, leading to mass escapes. According to prison authorities, around 2,700 inmates fled during the violence, with roughly 700 still unaccounted for. Among them were convicted extremists, and weapons were reportedly looted during the incidents.

In one major breach in Narsingdi, over 800 prisoners escaped, while more than 200 inmates broke out of the high-security Kashimpur facility after taking guards hostage.

Ongoing Security Challenge

Officials warn that the presence of escaped militants and the resurgence of extremist networks pose a continuing threat. Security agencies remain on high alert as they work to prevent any potential attacks and track down those still at large.
