Putin Suggests Conflict May Be Entering Final Phase
New Delhi: Russian President Vladimir Putin suggested that the ongoing war in Ukraine could be approaching a turning point. Speaking during Russia’s Victory Day celebrations in Moscow, he stated that the situation “may be coming to an end,” signaling a rare hint toward possible negotiations after years of conflict.
His comments came as Russia and Ukraine entered a three-day ceasefire, reportedly facilitated with diplomatic backing from the United States. As part of the arrangement, both sides agreed to exchange 1,000 prisoners each, marking one of the largest swaps since the conflict began in 2022. While the ceasefire has largely held, both sides have continued to accuse each other of isolated violations.
This year’s Victory Day parade in Moscow appeared less militaristic than previous editions. Unlike earlier displays, no heavy tanks rolled through Red Square. Instead, large screens showcased military equipment including missiles and drones, while troops, some linked to the Ukraine conflict, marched through the capital. Reports also indicated participation from foreign allied forces supporting Russia.
Putin also indicated openness to renewed diplomatic engagement with European leaders, though he emphasized that direct talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy would depend on reaching a broader peace framework first. His remarks suggest Moscow may be preparing for conditional negotiations rather than immediate direct dialogue.
U.S. President Donald Trump urged both sides to extend the ceasefire and work toward a permanent resolution. He described the conflict as one of the most devastating since World War II, highlighting the urgent need for diplomatic progress.
The Russia-Ukraine war, which began in February 2022, remains Europe’s most severe conflict in decades, causing massive casualties and destruction across Ukrainian cities. While diplomatic signals are emerging, the situation remains fragile, with uncertainty over whether the current ceasefire steps will lead to lasting peace.
