British PM Starmer resigns: Burnham, his main rival, from labour party likely to succeed

As on expectedly lines the British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Monday announced his resigntaion. Prerssure being mounted on him from his biggest rival Andy Burnham within the Labour party.

London: British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced his resignation amid pressure from the Labour party. Andy Burnham, mayor of Greater Manchester, is the front runner for prime Ministership and he is all set succeed him. Burnham is seen as Starmer's biggest rival in the Labour Party.

Starmer's annoucement of his resignation ended days of uncertainty. He said it was time for a new chapter in leadership and pledged full support to his successor, expressing confidence in the party's future and vowing to ensure a smooth and orderly transition of power.

In an emotional speech at 10 Downing Street, Starmer said "Every decision I have taken has been about putting the country I love first. That is why I will resign as leader of the Labour Party". Starmer promised to do everything he could to see an orderly transfer of power.

Keir Starmer served in the office for less than two years and was marked by public unpopularity. Starmer was elected as the Prime Minister after a landslide win in 2024.His resignation was galvanised by the victory of Andy Burnham in a speical election last week. The popular Andy Burnham challenged Starmer for the labour party leadership amid growing unpopularity.

Starmer said that the process to pick a new Labour Party Chief will begin on july 9, adding that he would remain Prime Minister until a successor is chosen in September.

It was only a matter of time that Starmer announced his resignation as pressure had been building for month, only to increase multi-fold on Friday When Andy Burnham won a Parliamentary election to return to Westminister, beating a candidate from far-right.

Britain is going through a rough patch.It has already the highest borrowing costs in the Group of Seven wealthy nations due to its high debt and interest payments, years of anaemic economic growth, its struggles to cut spending and the need to invest in areas like Defence.
