New Delhi: India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has held three rounds of conversations with Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi amid rising tensions in West Asia, the government said on Thursday.

According to Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, the discussions focused on ensuring the safe passage of India-bound vessels through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz and addressing concerns related to energy security.

Jaiswal was responding to questions about whether Iran had assured India regarding the safety of ships transiting through the vital maritime corridor.

Concerns Over Indian Nationals in Iran

The MEA also provided an update on the situation of Indian citizens in Iran as the ongoing conflict entered its 13th day.

According to officials, nearly 9,000 Indian nationals are currently in Iran. The group includes students, seafarers, businesspersons and pilgrims.

The government said several Indians had already returned home following travel advisories issued earlier. Authorities are now facilitating the relocation of citizens from sensitive areas to safer locations.

Evacuation Support Through Neighbouring Countries

Officials said that some Indian nationals have been moved out of Tehran and are being assisted in travelling through neighbouring countries such as Azerbaijan and Armenia.

The government has been helping with visa arrangements, land border crossings and commercial flight bookings for those attempting to leave the conflict-affected region. Jaiswal said the government remains committed to supporting stranded citizens and ensuring their safe return.

Diplomatic Outreach and Energy Concerns

The MEA also highlighted diplomatic outreach by Narendra Modi, who has spoken to several leaders in the Gulf region and emphasised the importance of dialogue and diplomacy to resolve the crisis.

India has also received requests from neighbouring countries such as BangladeshSri Lanka and Maldives seeking diesel supplies amid the disruptions.

Officials said the government will consider domestic energy requirements before taking any decision on additional exports. The MEA reiterated that stability in the Gulf region remains crucial for India’s energy security and the welfare of millions of Indians living and working there.
