Caracas: A new magnitude-4.9 earthquake struck off Venezuela’s northern coast on Friday, creating further challenges for a nation already struggling with the aftermath of a devastating seismic disaster. According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the tremor was recorded around 61 kilometres northwest of Maracay.

Residents in Maracay and Caracas reported feeling the shaking, raising fresh concerns among communities still dealing with the destruction caused by earlier earthquakes.

Death Toll Rises as Rescue Operations Continue

The latest tremor came shortly after two powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela on Wednesday evening, causing widespread destruction across several areas. The disaster has left at least 920 people dead and more than 3,300 injured, with rescue operations continuing in heavily affected regions.

Families searching for missing relatives have been forced to dig through collapsed buildings as emergency teams struggle to reach every affected area. Survivors and local residents have raised concerns about delays in receiving assistance, while authorities maintain that relief operations are underway.

The first few days after a major earthquake are considered crucial for locating survivors trapped under debris. As time passes, the chances of finding people alive become increasingly difficult, especially when access to water and essential supplies is limited.

International Rescue Teams Join Relief Efforts

A global response effort is expanding, with rescue groups from several countries arriving or preparing to enter Venezuela to support search-and-recovery missions.

Authorities have started distributing food and water to affected communities, including areas such as La Guaira. Acting President Delcy Rodríguez said the government is coordinating emergency measures and welcomed international support.

Officials also announced increased security measures in some regions to maintain order during the crisis. However, residents continue to call for faster aid delivery, saying the scale of the destruction requires a larger and more immediate response.
