India-Flagged Vessel Sinks Off Yemen After Red Sea Attack, All 13 Indian Crew Members Rescued Safely

New Delhi: A merchant ship belonging to India with the name MSV Faize Noore Oliya has sunk in the Red Sea after being attacked while passing close to Yemen. It was reported that the ship had capsized and sunk following an attack with a projectile while passing close to Yemeni waters.

All fourteen people aboard the vessel, including thirteen Indians and a foreigner, have been safely rescued by the Yemeni Coast Guard to Mokha Port.

India condemns ‘Unprovoked’ Attack

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has strongly condemned the act and referred to it as “unprovoked” attack on a defenceless civilian ship. The government has reiterated its concerns regarding the ongoing threats to shipping vessels in the Red Sea and asked for the resumption of unhindered navigation in the international waters.

The Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, has confirmed that all the crew members have been safely rescued and no injuries have been sustained.

Monitoring the Situation by the Embassy

MEA stated that India's Embassy in Riyadh is working in coordination with Yemeni authorities for the safety of the rescued crew members. The ministry also extended gratitude to the Yemeni Coast Guard for performing their rescue mission quickly.

No official identification has been made regarding the culprit of the attack yet.

Continued Red Sea Security Issues

The recent attack occurred against a backdrop of continuing security challenges in the Red Sea, which serves as an important sea route connecting Europe and Asia via the Suez Canal. The Red Sea area near Yemen and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait has seen a series of attacks on ships in the past few months.

As a result of worsening security conditions, many shipping firms have had to divert ships through the African route.
