California: An Indian-origin man has been arrested in California on suspicion of murdering his wife after allegedly telling investigators that US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents had taken her away from their home. Gurinder Gill, 28, was arrested on October 14, 2026, following an investigation into the disappearance of his wife, Jasmine Gill, 30, in Sacramento. According to the reports, Jasmine was last seen at the couple's residence on September 30, 2026. Her cousin reported her missing four days later.

Investigators Found Inconsistencies in His Account

Gurinder initially told police that ICE officers had taken Jasmine away while she was checking the mail outside their home. However, when detectives reached out to the agency, officials said no such operation had been carried out at the residence. Detectives subsequently identified inconsistencies in Gurinder's statements. They also discovered that the couple were involved in an ongoing divorce and child custody dispute, according to the reports.

Meanwhile, burned human remains discovered in El Dorado County on October 1, 2026, were later identified as Jasmine's body parts. Investigators obtained a murder arrest warrant for Gurinder, who is being held at Sacramento County Main Jail without bail, according to the report.

ICE Responds to the Allegations

ICE criticised the alleged attempt to blame its officers for Jasmine's disappearance. In a post on X, the agency described Gurinder as a "deranged man" and defended its personnel against what it called attempts to shift blame onto law enforcement.

Family Seeks Help to Bring Jasmine Home

Jasmine's family has launched a GoFundMe campaign to help bring her remains back to India. They remembered her as a devoted daughter, loving sister, caring nurse and mother to an eight-month-old baby boy.

The family said Jasmine had been seeking a divorce and trying to build a safer future for herself and her child. Her mother, Sukhwinder Kaur, also spoke about the cruelty her daughter had endured. Jasmine's death has left her family grieving while her infant son faces life without his mother. The case remains a devastating loss for relatives who had hoped she could begin a new chapter with her child.
