Washington: India’s Essar Group is set to strengthen its global industrial presence with an estimated $18 billion investment in a major steel project in the United States. The announcement was made by US President Donald Trump, who highlighted the project as a significant boost for American manufacturing.
The project will be developed by Essar’s US subsidiary Mesabi Metallics and is planned in Iowa. It is expected to become one of the largest steel manufacturing projects in the country.
The mega investment reflects Essar Group’s growing focus on expanding its footprint beyond India. The company plans to develop an integrated steel production system that connects raw material supply, mining operations and steel manufacturing.
The project will use iron ore resources from Minnesota and process them into steel at the Iowa facility. Once operational, the plant is expected to play an important role in strengthening the steel supply chain in the US.
Essar Group chairman Rewant Ruia attended the announcement event at the White House along with company representatives. The project marks a major step in Essar’s overseas growth strategy and its efforts to build large-scale industrial assets internationally.
The investment is also expected to generate employment opportunities during construction and after the facility becomes operational.
The steel project highlights the expanding business relationship between India and the United States. Indian companies have been increasing investments in global markets, particularly in sectors such as manufacturing, energy and infrastructure.
The Essar investment places an Indian company at the centre of a major US industrial development and showcases the growing international reach of Indian businesses.
