Trump Imposes Up To 100% Tariffs On Drone Imports (Img: X)
New Delhi: US President Donald Trump has announced a major tariff decision targeting foreign-made drones and their components, citing national security concerns and growing dependence on overseas suppliers.
The move comes at a time when the US military is facing increased pressure on its unmanned warfare capabilities amid the ongoing conflict with Iran.
Under the new proclamation signed by Trump, certain foreign drones and sensitive unmanned aircraft systems will face tariffs of up to 100%. The administration said drones with advanced capabilities or those considered strategically important for security will attract the highest tariff rates.
Smaller drones that do not fall under national security-sensitive categories will face a 25% tariff. The new duties are expected to come into effect for several products within 21 days of the announcement.
Drone imports from countries including the European Union, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Switzerland and Liechtenstein will face a 15% tariff, while products from the United Kingdom will be subject to a 10% duty. However, goods covered under existing trade agreements will continue to follow those arrangements.
The Trump administration said Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick reviewed the impact of foreign drone imports and concluded that international suppliers hold a significant share of the American market.
Officials argued that dependence on foreign manufacturers creates potential security vulnerabilities, especially as drones have become a crucial component of modern military operations, surveillance systems and battlefield strategies.
The White House also highlighted concerns over the safety and security risks linked to certain foreign drone technologies, while stating that domestic production capacity is currently insufficient to meet defence requirements.
The tariff decision comes amid rising challenges for the US military during its prolonged conflict with Iran. Reports suggest that American forces have suffered losses of MQ-9 Reaper drones during the war, increasing pressure to rebuild and modernise the drone fleet.
The Pentagon has been exploring cheaper armed surveillance drones capable of operating in coordinated swarms. Meanwhile, the Trump administration is seeking additional defence funding to support military operations and replenish equipment affected by the conflict.
