Tehran: Israel has announced the closure of all crossings into the Gaza Strip following recent Iranian attacks, a move that includes the shutdown of the Rafah Crossing and Kerem Shalom, two of the main entry points for humanitarian aid and goods into the enclave.
Despite concerns over potential disruptions, Israeli authorities have stated that the decision is not expected to significantly impact the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
The closure was implemented as a precautionary measure after heightened regional tensions triggered by Iranian attacks. The Rafah Crossing, which connects Gaza to Egypt, and the Kerem Shalom Crossing, a key Israeli-controlled entry point, have both been shut until further notice.
These crossings have played a critical role in the movement of aid, fuel and essential supplies into Gaza during periods of conflict and ceasefire arrangements.
The Co-ordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT), the Israeli agency responsible for overseeing civilian coordination in the occupied territories, stated that the closure would not significantly affect food availability inside Gaza.
According to COGAT, substantial quantities of food and humanitarian supplies have entered Gaza since the beginning of the ceasefire period. The agency claimed that these stockpiles currently exceed the nutritional requirements of the population.
While Israeli officials maintain that essential needs are being met, humanitarian access remains a key concern for international observers. The crossings are vital for delivering medical aid, fuel and other critical resources, especially during periods of heightened conflict.
The Rafah Crossing has often served as a primary route for humanitarian assistance coordinated with Egypt, while Kerem Shalom remains one of the busiest logistical hubs for goods entering Gaza.
The closure comes amid escalating tensions between Israel and Iran, raising fears of wider regional instability. Officials have not provided a timeline for reopening the crossings, leaving the movement of goods and aid uncertain for the coming days.
Monitoring of the situation continues as diplomatic and security developments unfold across the region.
