New Delhi: Second direct meeting will be held at southern Lebanese town of Naqoura to work out a ceasefire between Israel-Lebanon. Civilian representatives from Lebanon and Israel will take part in the second meeting on December 19.

The first meeting was held on December 3. This meeting will try to ensure implementation of the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah. Lebanon has often complained about violation of the ceasefire by Israel.

Casualties and Fragile Peace

The fragile peace is often interrupted by Israeli strikes on Hezbollah installations, since October 8, 2023. In the name of punishing militant outfit Hezbollah, Israel has killed more than 4,000 people in Lebanon.

A ceasefire was agreed between Israel and Lebanon on November 27, 2024. According to United Nations since then Israel has killed more than 300 people, including 127 civilians.

UN Urges Swift Peace

UN wants a peace deal as soon as possible to restrict war from expanding. The talks come as Israel continues to attack Lebanon on a daily basis, threatening full scale war.

A day before the meeting on December 18, Israel carried out a series of airstrikes on southern and northeastern Lebanon to disarm the militant Hezbollah group.

Israel’s Justification

The Israeli military tried to justify its strikes a day before the meeting. The Israel said that the strikes hit Hezbollah infrastructure, launching sites in a military compound used by the group to conduct training and courses for its fighters.

Lebanon’s army commander, Gen. Rodolph Haikal, held meetings with U.S., French and Saudi officials to boost its presence in the border area. The strategic environment and security challenges in Lebanon and the region was also discussed in the meeting.

Focus on Hezbollah Disarmament

The Israeli strikes came a day before the committee monitoring the enforcement of a U.S.-brokered ceasefire. The ministry added that the talks will focus on how to demonstrate progress toward Hezbollah’s disarmament.
