External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Wednesday met US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. In the meeting he raised India’s “interests and concerns” over the Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act (SRIA).

According to EAM Jaishankar, the talks also covered the ongoing situations in the Gulf and Ukraine. The discussions come amid India’s concerns over the possible implications of the proposed sanctions legislation.

Jaishankar Raises India’s Concerns

Sharing details of the meeting in a post on X, Jaishankar said he had reiterated India’s position on the sanctions bill during his discussion with Rubio.

“Good to meet @SecRubio of the US during #UNHighLevelWeek. Reiterated India’s interests and concerns with regard to SRIA. Also discussed the Gulf and Ukraine situations,” he said.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of UN General Assembly, with their discussions focused on the sanctions issue as well as the situations in the Gulf and Ukraine.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also confirmed the meeting with EAM S Jaishankar in New York, highlighting efforts to strengthen the US-India strategic partnership and coordinate on regional and multilateral issues.

Focus On Gulf And Ukraine

Jaishankar’s remarks indicate that the Russia sanctions legislation was a key issue raised by India during the talks. He also highlighted discussions on developments in two other major geopolitical theatres.
