New Delhi: A major steel plant linked to Indian billionaire Lakshmi Mittal has been caught up in the Russia-Ukraine war after a Russian missile strike hit ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih in Ukraine.

The attack killed two people and injured 13 workers and contractors, according to the company. Key facilities at the sprawling industrial complex were damaged, including infrastructure connected to its energy systems and blast furnace operations.

The damage forced the company to partially suspend production as emergency teams and specialists assessed the situation.

Plant Has Been Hit Before

ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih is one of Ukraine’s most important steelmaking facilities. The plant had also come under attack in 2022, when a Russian missile destroyed a rolling mill and killed one worker.

The latest strike has once again highlighted the risks faced by Ukraine’s industrial sector as Russian missile and drone attacks continue across the country.

The company described the facility as civilian industrial infrastructure and said efforts were underway to assess the damage and determine the repair requirements.

Wider Strikes Hit Kryvyi Rih and Kyiv

The latest attacks also affected Kryvyi Rih, the hometown of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Ukrainian authorities reported casualties in the wider city, while the plant separately confirmed two deaths and 13 injuries at its facility.

Russian strikes also caused major damage in Kyiv. A large fire broke out at the historic Petrivka book market near the Pochaina metro station, destroying several rows of retail structures and large quantities of books and other goods.

Zelensky Renews Air Defence Appeal

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has again urged Western countries to strengthen Ukraine’s air-defence capabilities, particularly against ballistic missiles and drones.

For ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih, the immediate challenge is restoring damaged systems and determining the extent of the production disruption. The company has not yet provided a timeline for the complete resumption of operations.
