Davos: US President Donald Trump on Thursday met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, reiterating that the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war must end.

Trump also announced plans to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in the coming days, signaling a potential breakthrough in one of the most protracted conflicts in recent European history.

“War Must End,” Trump Says

Speaking to the media, the 79-year-old Republican leader said, “I met President Zelenskyy here; the meeting was good. We (US delegation) are meeting President Putin today or tomorrow. The war has to end. A lot of people have been killed.” Trump emphasized that dialogue is essential to bring both sides closer to a resolution.

Possible Trilateral Talks on Horizon

Trump previously met Putin during a summit in Alaska in August last year, which both leaders described as “wonderful.” He had also hinted at a possible trilateral meeting involving himself, Zelenskyy, and Putin.

However, follow-up discussions had stalled after the Alaska Summit, with Trump occasionally criticizing the Russian approach. His Davos remarks suggest that efforts are now underway to revive high-level negotiations.

Progress Narrowed to “One Issue”

US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, who is part of the delegation alongside Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, said that negotiations are “down to one issue,” which he believes is solvable if both sides are committed. Witkoff is scheduled for a day-long visit to Moscow to hold discussions with Russian officials, without staying overnight. He expressed cautious optimism about resolving the remaining challenges.

Trump Questions NATO’s Role

In his Davos address, Trump also criticized NATO, the US-led military alliance, questioning the benefits Washington derives from the ongoing European security commitments. “The US is very far away from Ukraine and it has nothing to do with the war in Europe,” he said.

He added that many NATO partners “do not appreciate what we do,” and that the alliance results in “death, destruction and massive amounts of cash going to people who don’t appreciate it.”

Trump’s meetings with Zelenskyy and the planned discussion with Putin come amid growing global pressure for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict, which erupted in February 2022. Observers say any tangible progress could mark a significant moment in international efforts to end the war and stabilize the region.
